Cod liver oil is a dietary supplement derived from the liver of cod fish. As with most fish oils, it contains omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and also vitamin A and vitamin D. Cod liver oil can be obtained from eating fresh cod liver or by taking supplements, for a natural source of vitamins A and D and omega-3 fats.
Supports heart health, skin health, mood health and may support memory. Supports bone and joint health and may be beneficial for rheumatoid arthritis concerns. People take cod liver oil capsules to help with joint comfort and cardiovascular function. Cod liver oil contains vitamins A and D, vital nutrients for immune system function. Like regular fish oil, it's high in omega-3 fatty acids, which are linked to many health benefits, including a healthy inflammatory response and low blood pressure.
Cod liver oil can be taken by anyone and is best taken with food, particularly vegetables high in carotenoids like carrots since they are fat-soluble. Any main meal, like breakfast, lunch or dinner is a good time to take cod liver oil. Research shows that there are many benefits to taking cod liver oil supplements, including heart health support, immune support, and bone health.
Cod liver oil is likely safe for adults and children over 12 years, when taken by mouth. In some cases, it can cause side effects including belching, bad breath, heartburn, loose stools and nausea. However, taking cod liver oil with meals can often decrease these side effects.
Both oils deliver the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids, but cod liver oil has the added benefit of vitamins A and D. If you want these extra vitamins, then it is worth taking cod liver oil. Taking fish oil or cod liver oil with food, especially fatty food, may help digest and absorb the omega-3 fatty acids.
Yes. In fact, vitamin D is best absorbed when taken with a meal containing fats or oils, so fish oil can only help with that. Absorption of the omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil won’t be affected by vitamin D.
