Algae Oil

Algae is an informal term for a large and diverse group of photosynthetic eukaryotic organisms. Algae oil has been offered as a supplement for a few years now as a vegan or vegetarian alternative to fish oil and is rich in the DHA nutrient that helps support brain health and focus.

FAQ's

What is algae oil good for?

Algae oil is high in DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), one of the two omega-3 fatty acids we need for long-term physical and mental health. Studies have shown that supplementation with DHA from algae oil can lower triglycerides and boost both HDL (good) cholesterol and LDL (bad) cholesterol levels in people with heart health issues.

Is algae oil better than fish oil?

Not necessarily but it does offer another alternative to Omega 3. Algae oil can only produce DHA, the brain nutrient, but not the EPA nutrient. EPA has several benefits which DHA does not, such as lowering the risk of heart health concerns and supporting immune health. However, Algae oil is considered more sustainable and contains less of the potential pollutants that may occur in fish oil.

What are the benefits of taking algae supplements?

The main interesting benefit of algae oil is that it contains the DHA nutrient and may be able to support the symptoms of anxiety and depression, providing mood balance support. A recently published animal study showed that oil containing omega-3s helped to reverse all anxiety-like and depression-type behavior.

Does algae oil contain Vitamin D?

Algae oil is not considered a high source of natural Vitamin D, but does contain small amounts. Fish are known to be rich sources of vitamin D3 and it can also be obtained from lanolin (sheep wool) through UV light extraction.
